Chapter 13

“It was probably just someone who bore a striking resemblance to you,” Millie mumbled.

Blackjack nodded, and the cart rumbled out of sight.

Danielle grabbed Millie’s arm. “He’s lying?”

“Without a doubt.” Millie handed her friend her phone.

“That’s definitely Blaze. I don’t recognize the other guy.”

“Me, either. I need to show the picture to Amit.”

Millie and Danielle parted ways in the hall with Millie once again returning to the galley. Amit wasn’t around, and this time neither was Annette.

She turned to go and collided head-on with her friend who barreled through the swinging door.

“Sorry,” Annette grabbed Millie’s arm. “I didn’t mean to bulldoze over the top of you.”

“No problem. It seems like I’m hanging around here a lot lately. You’re probably getting tired of seeing me.”

“Nah.” Annette waved dismissively. “I know you’re trying to help Amit, and we both appreciate it.”

“Speaking of Amit, I thought I would stop by to see if he was back yet. Blackjack claims he never met with anyone in port, other than Wendy’s family.”

“So maybe the guy in the photo is a member of the family.”

“I suppose.” Millie frowned. “I hadn’t considered that angle, although he was wearing a crewmember lanyard.”

“Amit’s having a rough day. He and Carlah got into an argument. She heard a rumor that Wendy and Amit were close friends and is accusing him of cheating on her.”

“Poor guy. He can’t catch a break.” Millie patted her pocket. “I need to figure out who’s in the picture with Blackjack. He’s definitely a crewmember and on board this ship.”

“That’s it.” Annette snapped her fingers. “All you gotta do is take a look at the crew tracking system, figure out who boarded the ship and dinged their keycard around the time the mystery employee boarded.”

“Annette,” Millie beamed. “You’re brilliant.”

Her enthusiasm was short-lived. “I tried to get the guard at the gangway to tell me his name when I boarded and he refused. I can’t think of a single person in security who’ll give me access to the employee tracking program so I can check the records.”

“There has to be a way.” Annette eyed her friend thoughtfully. “I know someone who might be able to sneak through the computer’s back door and access the crew tracking system.”

“Who?”

“No.” Annette shook her head. “Forget I said anything.”

“C’mon Annette. Who is it?”

“All right. It’s Sharky.”

“Sharky?” Millie lifted a brow. “Sharky can find out which employees boarded the ship and the exact time?”

“Well…” Annette’s eyes slid to the side. “When we went on our non-date, he was bragging about how he’s some sort of computer whiz and figured out a way to access all of the restricted computer software. He didn’t tell me he could access the employee gangway entries but it’s possible. It’s also possible he was just blowing smoke and doesn’t have a clue.”

“True.”

“If he wasn’t making it up, he might be your best shot at taking a look at the boarding records. You’ll have to be exact on the time.” Annette gave her friend a thumbs up. “I say go for it.
